Leadership with David Starr

During my latest meeting with David Starr, we talked about leadership. David is a firm believer in personal responsibility. He also believes there is a strong link between leadership and ethical behavior, and this includes learning from leaders and teaching others.

When it comes to technical skills, he believes character is more important. For example, he says, “I’d rather have [people] with not the best skill set but a great attitude,” and he has a very hopeful message for us: “Over the years, you see the leaders, [people] who want to take that knowledge and share it with other people to maybe help them.”

David began by telling me that he believes that great leaders lead by example. In his view, “it doesn’t have to be somebody that’s a manager, or a CEO or president. I see a lot of people that are just great, hardworking, [they have] great morals, their work ethic is unbelievable, and they care about others.”

He says he sees people that go the extra mile. When they’re done with their own task or work, they help others with their tasks.

I asked David how a leader who is not a manager or supervisor can positively influence the people around him or her. He smiled and said that many good leaders do not even realize the good effect they are having on others: “Some people don’t even know they are great leaders, but they have a good attitude, they lend a helping hand, they have passion for what the end result is, and they take pride in their work.”

These conversations with David Starr are the highlight of my own work week, and I’m looking forward to my next meeting with him. David is a veteran racing driver who participates in several NASCAR series. ConectUS and Kyocera International, Inc. are delighted to be sponsoring David and his car in the NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for October 17 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race is due to be broadcast live on NBC.
